  1. Winkler, Todd: Composing Interactive Music: Techniques and Ideas Using Max (Cambridge: MIT Press, 1998)
  2. Rothstein, Joseph: MIDI: A Comprehensive Introduction (Madison: A-R Editions, 1992)

IV. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • Learn the Max/MSP graphical music programming language.
  • Learn some basic techniques of computer music generation, processing, and interactive controls using Max and/or MSP.
  • Learn how to use several types of composition algorithms and interactive control paradigms.
  • Write an original piece of interactive computer music using Max/MSP.

V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING:

35% -- Programming (lab) assignments

25% -- Semester Project

40% -- Exams (one on Max and one on MSP)

In addition to the lectures, there will be a required weekly lab session. The lab schedule will be arranged during the first class.
