Creating
Gestures
Using only the sounds from the library you created for
Assignment One, generate three different multi-timbral gestures, whose rhythmic
structures, amplitude envelopes, and spectral morphologies are similar to those
of the following three words:

Note that it is not necessary to try to imitate the exact
sound of the spoken words, only their dynamic shapes, accents, and approximate
rhythms. You may also exaggerate (for example, by extending either the initial
or final sounds, or by expanding the pitch range), as long as you maintain the
basic shape of the gesture.
Instructions:
- Use Cubase to construct your gestures. They should be
turned in as a single project, with each gesture on a separate set of
tracks, and spaced out in time such that they will play back in the
following order: Saskatchewan, Minneapolis, Renssalaer. Place the
whole project in a folder, which should contain the entire Cubase project,
including all the audio files. Turn in a CD-ROM with a rendered version
(.wav or .aif) that can be played back in class, plus the folder with the
Cubase project.
- Use at least 3 sounds from your library for each
gesture. You may re-use the same sound multiple times, if you like.
- Strive to get “dynamic morphologies,” especially in
the longer notes. Use dynamic EQ and/or other effects, modulation, etc.,
to create spectral and dynamic motion. Pay attention to stereo placement
and panning.
Your grade will be based on the following elements:
- 70% -
Technical: clean recording (no clicks, pops, distortion, hiss, hum, or
other extraneous background noise) and Project instructions followed.
- 30% -
Artistic: Project “intent” realized, expressiveness, dynamic and timbral
shape, overall effectiveness of gestures.
