Random Texture Generation
Using only the Non-Pitched, Natural Percussive sound(s)
from the library you created for Assignment One, generate 60 seconds of a
dense, quasi-random texture, similar in effect to a hail storm, or to Bernard
Parmegiani’s Matières
Induites. Note that the individual sounds within the texture should
vary randomly in their approximate pitch, velocity, and pan position.
Instructions:
- Create an instrument in Kontakt using your sound(s),
spread across several octaves. If you have several sounds, you may wish to
put them in different ranges, or use a velocity split.
- Create a project in Cubase, include the Kontakt2 VST
Instrument, and use one or more MIDI tracks to create your texture. Notes:
- You may create the quasi-random texture in various
ways in Cubase. Consider using the “paint” mode in the Key Editor and
then applying quantization with some random offsets.
- You may use MIDI effects to thicken the texture and
add random panning, but avoid adding echo effects that are too obvious or
repetitive, because that will detract from the “random” quality.
- Turn in your project on a CD-R. It should include the
following:
- A stereo mixdown (.wav or .aif) of your finished
texture, ready to play in class.
- Your Kontakt Instrument (including the samples).
- Your Cubase Project (including any audio files in
the project).
- Note: I should be able to load and play your entire
Cubase project from the CD-R, with no missing files.
Your grade will be based on the following elements:
- 80% -
Technical: clean recording (no clicks, pops, distortion, hiss, hum, or
other extraneous background noise) and Project instructions followed.
- 20% -
Artistic: Project “intent” realized, quality, denseness, and complexity of
texture, overall effectiveness.
