Called “marvelously inventive” by the Washington Post and “exuberant and captivating” by the San Francisco Chronicle, the music of Judith Shatin is inspired by her explorations and inventive extensions of timbre. Her works are internationally performed and widely recorded, with releases on the Centaur, CRI, Neuma, New World and Sonora labels. Her music has been commissioned by such groups as the Ash Lawn Festival, Barlow Foundation, Core Ensemble, Kronos Quartet, National Symphony the Dutch Hexagon Ensemble and Wintergreen Performing Arts, through Americans for the Arts. A two year retrospective of her work, culminating in the premiere of COAL, a folk oratorio scored for Appalachian ensemble, chorus and electronics, was sponsored by Shepherd College, with major funding from the Lila Wallace Readers Digest Arts Partners Program. She has also received awards the NEA, American Music Center, Meet the Composer and the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Residencies include Bellagio, La Cité des Arts, Grand Teton Music Festival, Mishkan Amanim, MacDowell, Yaddo and the Virginia Center for the Arts. Currently, she is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Music, Director of the Virginia Center for Computer Music and Chair of the McIntire Department of Music at the University of Virginia.
