The University of Texas Electronic Music Studios
Studio Rules, Policies, and Guidelines
Use of these studios is restricted to approved School of
Music faculty, official guests, and students working on projects for courses in
electronic music. Use of these studios for any other purpose without permission
of the UTEMS Director or staff will result in loss of privileges.
ACCESS:
The Building monitor has one
copy of the key for each studio, as well as a master key for use by the
building monitor. To obtain the key to a particular studio, you must:
- Be an official UTEMS guest, or a student
currently enrolled in an electronic music course.
- Be on the official access list for that studio,
that semester.
- Be scheduled for that studio at that time, or
prepared to leave immediately when/if the scheduled user arrives.
- Locate the building monitor and leave your UT ID
in exchange for the studio key.
RULES:
- Always sign the logbook at the beginning and end
of your sessions.
- Never remove a studio key from this building for
any reason. (See note below.)
- Never remove equipment or manuals from any
studio without prior authorization.
- Sign out anything that you do remove in the log;
sign it back in when you return it.
- Please adhere to the schedule. Come on time.
Leave on time.
- Clean up after yourself. Return everything to
the way you found it.
- Don't attempt to recalibrate or repair equipment
yourselves (note problems in log).
- Don't download or install any software on EMS
computers. Especially on Macintosh computers, installing software often
has undesirable side effects that can prevent our critical applications
from functioning properly. Please let the UTEMS staff handle all system
maintenance and configuration.
- No food or drinks.
- No smoking.
- No guests without prior permission.
NOTES:
- You are personally responsible for both the key
and the respective studio/equipment while your ID is in the monitor’s
possession. Never remove a studio key from this building for any reason.
If there is a breach of security, all the studios must be re-keyed; this
is very expensive, and the person responsible will pay the bill. Do not
lend the key to anyone. Return it to the monitor when you have finished
your session. If you cannot find the monitor, but have to leave, then lock
the key in the studio and come back for your ID at another time.
- The studio alarms are armed automatically during
hours when the building is closed. If you are not out of the labs by the
time they arm, you will trigger the alarm, the police will come, and they
will not be amused. If you do end up setting off the alarms, you must call
the police (1-4441) immediately, tell them you are a student and explain
what happened. Then wait for them to arrive and be respectful. They are
just doing their job. But even better, get out of the labs on time so you
don't set off the alarm!
- It should not be necessary to say that we are
all dependent on each other here -- no amount of security precautions can
suffice to protect us from members of our own user community who are
either careless or unscrupulous. We have no insurance on any of this
equipment or software and we have a very limited budget that must cover
repairs and replacements, as well as new acquisitions. We rely on the
"honor system" and it has worked pretty well so far; let's keep
it that way.
Thanks for your cooperation.
